Where the Magic Happens: Master

UPDATE 1/15/13: I am pleased to announce that the color missing from our room is currently underway! I'm adding some art above the bed rather than what's currently there, new bedding, and curtains. This room is something I love but I need color! Therefore, we are currently doing a mini-makeover and the master will look differently SOON!

It's that time... to blog about our bedroom. Where the "magic happens", or lack there of. James and I couldn't decide what we wanted for the bedroom. I decided I wanted the absence of color and we chose gray, black and white. I do want to incorporate some bright fun pillows but I haven't made it that far yet:)

We painted the room Elephant Skin by Behr to go with the grays in the rest of the lower level of the house. The color is splendid and the contrast of the black furniture is so appealing to me. I absolutely love it. Because of the darker walls and dark furniture we wanted to off-set those colors with solid white which is what we chose for the bedding, curtains, accents, etc...

The bedding is what we splurged on. We bought a beautiful damask stripe duvet cover and matching 700 ct. Egyptian cotton sheets. Never in my life have I spent $700 on bedding, but I did this time and I do NOT regret it. That cotton feels like heaven on a naked body (too much? Sorry). Seriously, though.

The solid white grommet curtain panels we got at Target for like, $25.00. So with the off-set of the white bedding with dark surroundings is beautiful to me. We kept the room simple, didn't want to add a lot of "stuff". The more rooms I redo, the more I start to understand the concept that "less is more". The Master was the room that made me understand that statement.

My favorite part of the room is probably my lamps from Hobby Lobby. I'm kind of obsessed with the whole "cat and the hat" feel I get from them. I think they are stinkin' amazing!

So there is our room. I love it. Once I get around to taking more pictures, I'll update the post! I'm just terrible with a camera and to be honest I don't have much time to take lots of pictures:)

Oh, Teagan.....

Teagan is my "blurt it out without thinking" child. She's terribly smart, and slightly completely blunt when it comes to what is running through her four year old head. Here's a story for you. And Mom's, what would you do and how would you handle this if it happened to you in public?

A few nights ago Teagan was in bed with me. She usually sleeps in our room when Daddy is out of town because, well.. Mommy gets scared when Daddy's gone and Teagan likes to "protect" me. Anyways, Teagan couldn't sleep and we ended up just turning off the TV and sitting in bed talking for what seemed like hours. She wanted to know about Heaven, what it was, why it's there, etc.... So we went through the whole spiel about when you die and you're a Christian you're soul goes to Heaven to be with Jesus. She wanted to know who dies and why, and as I was unsure how to answer this I simply told her that when you get old you just die. You're body becomes old and eventually you go to be with Jesus, but there are occasions such as accidents or illness that young people can pass away also. Mainly Teagan just took in that when you get OLD, you die.

Now, Teagan is four. So she considers anyone "older" to be OLD. Gray hair = old. Glasses = old. Wrinkles = old. You get the picture. Well... at Hobby Lobby yesterday we were getting a ton of fabric cut and the woman working there was an older woman, probably mid-60's. She had gray hair, glasses, and wrinkles and looked like the picture perfect "Grandma". Teagan noticed that. So, with our talk about dying and going to Heaven fresh in her brain she told the woman: " You're going to die, cause you're an old Grandma". OH MY GOODNESS! She didn't! Yes, Yes, she did.

Horrified as I was, I was also speechless. I honestly did not know what to say. Nothing would come out. It was embarrassing and although Teagan was not being rude, she still just can't say these things. What was I supposed to say? Or do? Or not say? Or not do? Kids are kids. I understand that. My brother-in-law used to think every black person was Michael Jackson and would just spill that out in public, but Teagan told this woman she was going to "die"!

Would you discipline for such a statement? Or do you just talk to them about even if they think something, it doesn't mean they should say it? I honestly had an epic parent-failure moment, because I had no idea how or what to say in that exact moment.

My Dad thought it was hilarious, me... not so much. Totally embarrassing.

Parker's new room

Fun Button Lamp Shades I Made!
SimplySaid Design {Greatest Vinyl Wall Decals, EVER!}
{Please remember I suck with a camera and I wish I had professional pictures to post, but I don't! So it's a damn shame I can't get pictures to show how adorable Parks room really is!}

After buying our first home we knew we wanted the kid's rooms finished first. We wanted them to have their own spaces, and for it to feel like their home; seeing that it was a new house, new city, new life. First priority, Parker's room.

I hate typical toddler rooms. Trucks, trains, sports, monkeys etc... Too common, and absolutely boring. No offense to those that chose that route, it's just not for me. Parker's room needed to be transitional, something that fit a toddler but could also transfer into a little boys room. I wanted colors, shapes, patters, and texture. Being a girl and loving all things pink, this room was a slight challenge for me. With the help of my friends we all came up with different ideas which were molded into Parker's room!

Bright, blue walls. Lots of lime green, orange, and splashes of yellow. And my favorite part, incorporating black and white patterns into the mix. The final product makes me happy. It's fun, all boy, and different. So with the  help of my friends [Summer, Brandie, and Cassie], Parker's room is finished and I'm in love.

DIY Hand Soap

What you will need:

8oz bar of soap [any smell, brand, etc...]
1 gallon distilled water
2 tsp liquid glycerin [this can be found at your grocery store by the bandaids, anticeptics, etc...]
grater
funnel
whisk

What you need to do:

Shave down the 8oz bar soap with a cheese grater and combine with the distilled water and glycerin. Heat over med-high and stir continuously until soap is completely dissolved. Once soap has dissolved, turn off heat and allow to sit for 10 hours [yes, I said hours]. After it has sat for the allotted time whisk the mixture, and use a funnel to pour the soap back into the distilled water jug. Pour into empty soap pumps around the house.

There you have it. Simple as 1, 2, 3.... Home made hand soap. Now go wash your hands!

ETSY: These are a few of my favorite things.

I love Etsy. Although I would like to purchase every single thing listed on the entire site, I can't. I do however have some favorite shops that should definitely be looked at! I have bought $100's of dollars of decorative throw pillows from two different shops. One shop sells completely ready to use pillows, and the other sells pillow covers which is just fine seeing that you can buy pillow inserts at any Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, etc... And the other shop is where I like to purchase my curtain panels and table runners. These are probably my three favorite shops on Etsy. Take a look! A girl can NEVER have too many pretty pillows:)

Land of Pillows This is a fantastic shop with TONS of pillow choices. I am really into the geometric and damask prints right now, and Land of Pillows offers so many different options, colors, sizes, etc... The pillows always ship quickly and have been great accent pieces for my home.

Simple Southern Charm Now this shop is amazing. I love every single item listed and being a simple southern girl, the shop name itself had me obsessed. This is the shop that sells me my pillow covers. The fabrics in this shop are perfectly pretty; all of them. This shop owner received my order and had my purchases in the mail the next morning. Total time to receive my things was two days!

Exclusive Elements Ahhhh, Exclusive Elements how I love thee. I ordered Parkers Chevron Print curtains from this shop for probably 1/3 of what I would pay for the same exact curtains at every other shop on Etsy. I ordered his panels and probably two weeks later they arrived! Hand made, perfectly stitched, beautiful, thick fabric, and for an amazing price. This shop sells curtain panels, table runners, aisle runners, napkins, placemats, and more. I LOVE EXCLUSIVE ELEMENTS!
